School Values: At St Peter’s are children are explicitly taught the Jesuit Values and these are the qualities we seek to grow in our children. Their rationale is to support and promote the gospel values and virtues of the Catholic Church in its mission. St Peter’s children are…

Pastoral Care

At St Peter’s we are proud to be a My Happy Mind School, this means that as a school we consider the mental health and wellbeing of our children as one of our top priorities. We have created a whole school culture that helps build our children’s resilience, confidence and self-esteem as a well as teaching them how to self-regulate in those stressful times.

At St Peter’s, we use My Happy Mind to help create a positive mental wellbeing culture in which children build resilience, self-esteem, and character. My Happy Mind uses the latest research, science, and technology to help children develop lifelong habits and learn to thrive.

My Happy Mind is taught across the whole school in weekly sessions, and consists of 5 units:

Meet Your Brain – Learning about how our brains work.

Celebrate – Understanding our character strengths and celebrating ourselves.

Appreciate – Developing gratitude as a habit.

Relate – Building positive relationships.

Engage – Engaging with the world.

Overseen by our Family Learning Mentor (FLM) Programmes such as ELSA, Forest School nurture groups, are all tailored to individuals’ needs to allow the child to grow in God’s love. Our school is committed to addressing a range of barriers to enable our children to learn and achieve. Through Early Help, we work closely with a large number of outside agencies and professionals to provide our children and their families with the help and support they need. We pride ourselves on being an inclusive school which promotes positive, healthy relationships.

Curriculum

At St. Peter’s Catholic Primary School, through our HRSE (Human Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum we aim to educate is to educate complete human person. We wish for children to have: a positive attitude about their own bodies, which have been created in God’s image; deepen a loving relationship with God; foster an understanding of the teachings of the Catholic Church about how to live a full life, a life of virtue and the place of human sexuality in living a full life, marriage and parenthood; understand how to show respect to others and be able to sustain healthy relationships with all people they meet. We encourage children to have their own voice, to think deeply and reflect on their life choices and how these choices may affect others around them.

The majority of our PSHE curriculum is taught through the Catholic HRSE scheme 'Life to the Full', which fulfils the statutory requirements of our Health & Well Being and Relationships education.  Life to the Full adopts a spiral curriculum approach which builds on prior knowledge and ensures that our children develop and grow as they progress through the school.

As with all our curriculum areas there is a focus on the acquisition and understanding of vocabulary. The programme includes teaching about personal health, physical and emotional well-being, strong emotions, private parts of the body, personal relationships, family structures, trusted adults, growing bodies, puberty, periods, life cycles, the dangers of social media, where babies come from, an understanding of the Common Good and living in the wider world.
